Book Review: “You Are a Badass” by Jen Sincero

You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero book review

There are a few things I credit to my decision to embrace my life as a coach. You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero is one of them.

After taking a year and half of severe downs, one wave crashing down right after the other, I knew that there was something I wasn’t listening to deep down inside of myself. I kept living for that moment in the future when things would be the way I wanted them to be, instead of trying to figure out how to achieve that feeling in my present. I happened to get recommended this book, and then a few months later, the biggest wave of them all crashed down upon me. I needed a distraction, and this book kept me thinking of other things on my 45-minute commute to work, and my 45-minute commute home. And those car rides changed my life.

There are many things that Jen talks about in her novel, but the biggest takeaway is this: You are the only person in charge of your life. You work at a job where you hate what you do and don’t get along with your boss? You have the power to change that, and if you don’t change it the only person you can blame is yourself. You’re unhappy in your relationship? You are the only person who can take control of the situation and turn it back toward happiness. Alternatively, you are the only person who can realize just how negative it really is, and end it. You have the ticket to your own happiness. You just have to be brave enough to jump on that particular train.

This resonated with me. If my parents tell me to believe in Santa Claus as a child, I’m going to carry that belief with me until I choose to let it go. But that’s an easy one. If you believe that you can’t have both work and family, then you will only have one. If you believe that money is hard to come by, and don’t think it likes you very much, you aren’t going to gain much of it no matter how hard you work. You have to choose to change your beliefs, and by doing so, you’ll figure out how to change your life. You ARE a badass, you just have to choose to let them out, no matter how scary it is.

I listened to this book, and then I listened to it again. And then I decided to stop living my okay life and decided to build one for myself that was incredible. And I haven’t looked back since.

BONUS: You Are a Badass at Making Money is brilliant for changing your money mindset.
